Pre-row safety guide
It is every rower’s responsibility to assess the risks of every outing. If in doubt, seek advice or change your plans – a missed outing is better than taking unnecessary risks. The considerations rowers should make before taking to the water are detailed in our one-page pre-row safety guide.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke
Prolonged exposure to the sun at many times of year can cause sunburn and dehydration through exercise causes body temperature to rise. The two combined can cause heat exhaustion and subsequently heat stroke.
Water quality and waterborne diseases
The River Stour at Friars Meadow received bathing water status in Spring 2024. Among other things, this means that the Environment Agency will monitor water quality regularly during bathing season.
Hypothermia
Normal body temperature is 37°C. If this falls to below 35°C due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures or immersion in cold water, hypothermia will set in. Members should be aware of the symptoms in themselves and others; the following are the most common but not all may be present.
