Sudbury Rowing Club shines at British Rowing Championships

Sudbury Rowing Club returned from the British Rowing Club Championships (17-20 July) with a string of outstanding results – a proud moment for one of Suffolk’s smallest but most determined clubs.

Competing against a number of top clubs from across the United Kingdom, Sudbury’s rowers rose to the challenge, despite the British weather bringing torrential downpours and lightning, which caused several races to be delayed or suspended over the weekend.

On Saturday the Women’s Club 8+ event saw Sudbury win a silver medal in their debut race together. Featuring junior club member Lilly Krohn, the crew led for 1750m of the 2000m final, holding off the Cambridge Development Squad before being narrowly overtaken by Auriol Kensington on the line. Sudbury posted a time of 07:13.48, just one second behind the gold medallists, in what was one of the tightest finishes of the event. A total of 2 seconds was all that separated the top three crews.

There was further success in the Open Championship Quad Sculls, where Club Captain Harry Moule took gold in a composite crew with Hereford Rowing Club, finishing in 06:31.78.

On the Monday, Charlie, Oli and Ted represented Sudbury in the junior categories, proudly flying the flag for the club at national level for the first time.
Sudbury’s adaptive rowers also delivered impressive performances. Sophie Brown winning gold, and Luke Payne claiming silver rounding off a weekend that showcased the club’s depth and diversity.

Club Coach Tony Moule said:

“I’m incredibly proud of every athlete. The weather threw everything at us, but the crews kept their focus and proved they could compete with the best in the country. For a small club like Sudbury, these results really mean a lot.”

Sudbury Rowing Club’s has recently celebrated its 150th anniversary underlining its long-standing role in promoting both grassroots and competitive rowing in Suffolk.
